A large number of climbers, ready to climb K2, left for Camp-1 from the base camp of the world’s second highest peak as the weather cleared on Thursday, Geo News mentionted.

K2, often referred to as the “killer” has been witnessing a surge of climbers for the past two days as it is the annual climbing season.

The clear and pleasant weather gave the climbers a chance to acclimatize to the K2 atmosphere, hence they climb up to Camp 1 and Camp 2.

The summit base camp receives multiple missions one after the other as 12 missions arrived today and another five arrived yesterday.

One of the climbers starting their expeditions is Robert, who is the most senior of the climbers currently at K2 Base Camp.

The 65-year-old belongs to a French island. He is accompanied by two Pakistani porters.

Talking to Geo News, Robert expressed his joy in coming to Pakistan. He said that he started very slowly, therefore, he has climbed only a few peaks.

On Tuesday, the Italy-Pakistan K2 Jubilee Expedition team, comprising women from both countries, started their expedition from the K2 base camp.

The expedition team is headed by Samina Baig, who is the first Pakistani to climb K2, and consists of four Pakistani and four Italian climbers, who also underwent fitness tests in Italy.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the first successful summit and this special mission is being held to commemorate the historic feat.

Italian adventurers already hold many records in mountaineering. However, on July 31, 1954, they climbed the 8,611-meter-high K2, the world’s second-highest peak, for the first time in the world.
