LONDON:

Serhou Guirassy scored his first league goal since October as Borussia Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 3-0 at home on Tuesday to restore a four-point lead on second place.
Nico Schlotterbeck and Marcel Sabitzer scored while Guirassy responded off the bench for the first time this season by striking late after Jobe Bellingham forced Bremen into an error.
Stuttgart’s 3-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the evening moved the German Cup holders to a degree, but 2024 Champions League finalists Dortmund responded with a controlled but unspectacular display.
Sloterbeck said Dortmund “were not perfect, but on the right track. We still have a few steps to take, but we will do so in the coming weeks.”
Dortmund are eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich, who play away to Cologne on Wednesday.
Sloterbeck, Dortmund’s captain and standout player this season, put his side ahead with a neat header from a corner on 11 minutes.
The hosts were sloppy with the ball and disorganized without it in the first half, leaving the pitch to isolated boos and whistles from the fans, even if Bremen lacked the quality to punish them.
Making his 250th Bundesliga appearance, Sabitzer put a nervous Dortmund two ahead with a goal in the 76th minute, driving the ball into the bottom left corner.
“Obviously it wasn’t our best game — everyone has the right to react however they want,” Sabitzer told Sky. “There’s no point beating around the bush — that’s obviously not what we’re aiming for.”
Subbed in for former Wolves striker Fabio Silva, Guirassy came on midway through the second half and was in the right position to score when Bellingham won the ball with seven minutes remaining.

“Wild” victory of Stuttgart
Nicolas Nartey hit a late winner and Deniz Udav continued his hot form as Stuttgart beat Eintracht Frankfurt at home to move two places into third.
“It was wild,” Undav told Sky Germany of the “spectacular game”.
“I could have scored 10 goals myself. We could have easily won 3-1, 4-1.”
Frankfurt have struggled this season after last season’s third-place finish, their best result in three decades.
Rasmus Christensen connected with a corner to put his side in front after five minutes, but Frankfurt got Stuttgart back into the game when goalkeeper Kava Santos made a routine save, allowing Ermedin Demirovic to finish.
Udav put his side in front 10 minutes before the break, tripping the Frankfurt defense and unleashing a low shot that deflected wide into the bottom corner.
Udav, who has nine goals and two assists in his last eight league games, forced two saves from Santos and flashed just wide of the post in the second half.
Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab equalized three minutes after coming on, but his effort was slowed by another debut goal minutes later when Nartey headed in from close range.
Mainz continued their recovery under new manager Urs Fischer, climbing off the bottom of the table with a 2-1 win over Heidenheim, who replaced them in last place.
Tuesday’s match between Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen was postponed just two hours before kick-off, the third Bundesliga game to be called off in a week due to the wild winter weather in northern Germany.
