LONDON:
Novak Djokovic created a Wimbledon Wimbledon semifinal against the World Number One Jannik Sinner as he moved one step closer to claiming a historic 25th Grand Slam title.
The Serb won 6-7 (6/8), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 vs. Flavio Cobolli in front of British Queen Camilla on Wednesday to reach Wimbledon for the last four for a 14th record in men’s game.
Earlier, the triple big sinner champion reduced the fears of injuries before matching the 10th Ben Shelton 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 6-4 seed on an impressive screen.
In women’s tie, the five -year winner of the Grand Slam Iga Swikek and former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic have reached the semifinals for the first time and will clash for a place in the final.
The seven -time Djokovic champion was severely pushed by the Italian 22nd Cobolli seed, but eventually had a lot of nous and boats for the 23 -year -old.
“It means the world to me that I am still able to play Wimbledon’s final stages at 38,” he told the court.
“Thank you for shouting for my age. I really appreciate it, it’s beautiful. It makes me feel very young.
“And I guess another thing that makes me feel very young, competing with young people like Cobolli today.”
The sixth seed prepared for the competition, meeting Camilla, the wife of King Charles III, who said he was holding the “fingers crossing” for his fight.
He watched Djokovic from the Royal Box, along with British actor Hugh Grant.
There was a collective surprise when the Serbian slipped fell clumsy while serving for victory, but played fears of injuries.
“I had an unpleasant slip, but this is happening when you play on the grass,” he said. “I will visit this issue now with my Physio and I hope I will be well in two days.”
The Serb now holds the record of all time for the semifinals of Wimbledon men, moving from eight -time champion Roger Federer, who has reached the last four times.
He has also reached a 52nd Grand Slam semifinal, extending the record of all time in the men’s game.
Djokovic is now in two wins to break his tie with Court Margaret for the biggest singles titles for each player, men or woman.
But the sinner will offer a different level of challenge.
The top seed has won its last four games against Djokovic, hitting him in straight sets in the semifinals of the recent French open.
The sinner had caused fears that he may have to get out of the tournament after falling early on his fourth tie against Grigor Dimitrov on Monday.
He was falling from two sets and on the rim of a shock out when the Bulgarian pulled out a thoracic muscle while serving and had to retire.
The sinner was wearing a protective sleeve in his right hand against Shelton and said that his injury had “improved” as his practice was limited on Tuesday.
Carlos Alcaraz, who has beat Djokovic in the last two finals at Wimbledon, takes the fifth seed of Taylor Fritz in Friday’s other semifinal.
‘The dream came true’
Caution will change on Thursday to women’s semifinals.
The eighth seed SwIatek said he had “goosebumps” after a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the Russian 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova.
The Polish former world number one has won four titles on the clay in French Open, as well as the US Open in 2022, but the previous best result in Wimbledon was a run -back in 2023.
“I feel great. Although I’m in the middle of the tournament I have already taken after this victory. I am very happy and proud of myself and will continue,” he said.
Facing Bencic, Switzerland, which shocked the Russian seventh seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2).
The 28 -year -old had a daughter, Bella, in April 2024, but has already increased back to 35 in the world since he returned from maternity leave.
“It’s crazy. It’s incredible. It’s a dream come true. I tried not to think about it at the point of the race. I’m just speechless,” Bencic said.
The world number one Aryna Sabalenka plays an American 13th Amanda Anisimova seed in the semifinals of other women on Thursday.
