REGGIO EMILIA:

Juventus beat Sassuolo 3-0 on Tuesday to keep their Serie A title hopes alive in a game where under-pressure striker Jonathan David scored his first league goal since the start of the season.
Luciano Spalletti stuck with David who missed a penalty in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Lecce, and the much-maligned striker repaid the manager’s faith by completing the win and assisting Fabio Miretti.
“I had to score that goal and I’m happy, I’m happy with the win,” David told DAZN.
“For me, the saddest thing about the missed penalty is that we left two points behind.”
Juventus are fourth in the standings with 36 points, leaders Inter with three points, having played two matches less, while Sassuolo are 11th with 23 points.
The first real chance fell to Juventus when Kenan Yildiz twisted and turned his way into the area, but his powerful low shot was saved by goalkeeper Arianet Muric and Andrea Campiaso sent the rebound into the side netting.
Khephren Thuram was next to try his luck for the visitors, sending his effort straight at the keeper before the first goal came from an own goal in the 16th minute.
Pierre Kalulu played a ball into the Sassuolo area and defender Tarik Muharemovic’s header went over Muric, who was well off the line, and into his own net.
Yildiz, a constant threat for the home side, had three shots from the edge of the area saved by the keeper before half-time.
Juventus, for all their dominance, went into the break with just that one-goal advantage against a Sassuolo side that failed to score an on-target effort.

The Redemption of David
The visitors continued to press in the second half. David passed to Miretti in the box and the off-balance midfielder sent his shot over the bar, but it was soon recovered.
David delivered the pass again and this time Miretti got into the box and fired his shot past Muric in the 62nd minute. David made it 3-0 a minute later.
The Canadian pounced on a poor pass from Jay Idzes and into the area where he rounded the onrushing keeper before firing into the empty net.
The goalscorer was swarmed by his teammates and Spalletti as a relieved David ran to celebrate his long-awaited goal.
“It’s a nice touch, everyone here is so supportive of me and the team, so it’s a great sign that everyone can celebrate together,” added David. “I really appreciate that.”
