Columbia University discipline 80 students for super-Palestinian protest

The University of Columbia disciplined dozens of pre-Palestinian student protesters who occupied part of the school’s main library during a demonstration in early May that led to multiple arrests.

Following the protest, the university began research into rule violations, banned campus participants and put them in temporary suspension, he said.

It issued its final determinations on Tuesday.

Columbia for Palestine, a pre-Palestinian team at school, said on Tuesday that 80 students were informed Monday of their punishments.

We support freedom of speech. However, demonstrations and other protest activities that occur in academic buildings and venues where academic activities take place have an immediate obstacle to maintaining our basic academic mission.

He said disciplinary action marked “most suspensions for a single political protest in Columbia’s history” and overcame the previous disciplinary action they announced against people for other protests.

In March, Trump’s administration said he was punishing the university for how he handled last year’s pre-Palestinian protests, canceling hundreds of millions of dollars in research grants.

He claimed that Columbia’s response to alleged anti -Semitism and harassment of Jewish and Israeli members of the academic community was inadequate.

After the government announced funding cancellations, the school announced a series of commitments in response to the administration’s concerns.

“We support freedom of speech,” the school said in a statement at that time. “But protests and other protest activities that occur in academic buildings and venues where academic activities take place have an immediate obstacle to maintaining our basic academic mission.”

The protesters, including some Jewish groups, say Trump’s administration has mistakenly confused their criticism of Israel’s military attack on Gaza with anti -Semitism and their defense of Palestinian rights with support for extremism.

Israeli’s devastating military campaign in Gaza followed a deadly attack in October 2023 in Israel from Hamas, the militant organization that ruled Gaza.

Last week, Columbia adopted a controversial definition of anti -Semitism that equates him with the contrast with Zionism.

The school also stated that it would no longer deal with the pre-Palestinian team at Columbia Apartheid Disest University.

The government has sought to use the leverage of federal funding with other educational institutions, including the University of Harvard, through campus protests. He also tried to deport some foreign pre-Palestinian students, but has faced court barricades.

Supporters of rights have raised concerns about the just process, academic freedom and freedom of speech on government actions.
