China on Friday imposed “retaliatory measures” against US defense companies and officials after the Donald Trump administration approved a record arms sale to Taiwan.

“In response to the latest US announcement of large arms sales to China’s Taiwan region, China has decided to take countermeasures under the Foreign Sanctions Act against 20 US defense-related companies and 10 senior officials involved in arming Taiwan in recent years,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Trump administration earlier this month announced eight new arms packages for Taiwan totaling more than $11 billion in a record one-off sale in Taipei.

Sales approved by the US Department of State include the sale of more than $4 billion in 60 M107A7 self-propelled aircraft and related equipment, 82 M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, 420 Army Tactical Missile Systems or ATACMS, more than $1 billion in 3,000,000 ALTIUS tube-launched missiles, droneOW.

Beijing criticized the move and said in a ministry statement: “We emphasize once again that the Taiwan issue is at the core of China’s core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations.”

“Anyone who attempts to cross the line and make provocations on the Taiwan issue will face China’s firm response… No country or power will ever underestimate the determination, will and ability of the Chinese government and people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.

The ministry said “movable and immovable properties and other types of assets” of these US businesses and individuals inside China “will be frozen”.

“All organizations and individuals within China will be prohibited from engaging in trade, cooperation and other activities with them,” it said.

Beijing urged Washington to abide by the one-China principle and the three jointly announced China-US, stop Taiwan’s dangerous arming moves and stop undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

It also urged the US to “stop sending wrong messages to the separatist ‘Taiwan independence'” forces, the statement said, adding that Beijing would continue to “take decisive measures to firmly defend national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity”.
