PHILADELPHIA:
Chelsea beat Benfica in a game that continued for about five hours at the Club World Cup on Saturday to create a fourth final match with the Brazilian side Palmeiras in the United States tournament.
The London Association was grateful to additional time targets by Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to give them a 4-1 victory over Benfica.
The delayed explosion of their scoring installed one last-16 draw that took four hours, 39 minutes to complete the Charlotte Bank Stadium in North Carolina after a near-two-hour delay.
The director of Chelsea Enzo Maresca was satisfied with the victory of his team, but hit the delay that turned the tie in a marathon of about five hours.
“I think it’s a joke, it’s not football,” Maresca said.
“For 85 minutes we had control of the game. We created a lot of chance of winning the game. Then after the break, the game changed – for me personally, it’s not football.”
Earlier, Chelsea was seemingly ready for a win after Reece James’ second half, left it 1-0 to four minutes of adjustment.
But just as Chelsea began to think about their fourth mission, the arrival of a storm over Charlotte caused local security protocols that needed to stop the game.
He noted the sixth opportunity during the Club World Cup that a game has been disturbed by a weather warning.
When the game continued just under two hours later, a rejuvenated Benfica grabbed an injury, after Chelsea substitute Malo Gusto was found to have handled the penalty after intervention by the assistant video.
Argentina’s veteran Angel Angel Di Maria of Benfica went up to roll in a frozen sentence, sending the game in addition to time.
A first half of the first half of the extra time saw Benfica, decreased to 10 men after Gianluca Prestianni’s second yellow card at the end of the arrangement, threatened to take a leading role as they were chasing an unlikely victory.
But instead it was Nkunku who shot Chelsea back ahead, the French international grouping up close after the low shot of Moises Caicedo under Benfica Antoliy Trubin goalkeeper.
As the game opened, Benfica was increasingly vulnerable to the counterattack and Chelsea.
Neto made it 3-1 with a finish after surpassing the goal in the 114th minute and three minutes later Dewsbury-Hall finished the way to send Chelsea until the last eight.
They will now return to Philadelphia, where they played two games on the team stage, to play Palmeiras in the quarter -finals on Friday.
The Brazilian club was grateful to an additional winner by replacement Paulinho as they dug up Botafogo 1-0 opponents in a friction battle earlier on Saturday at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The wing came in the second half at the same time, as coach Palmeiraras Abel Ferreira withdrew the teenage feeling Estevao Willian, a move that was embarrassed at the moment, but eventually proved inspired.
The tie had reached the 100th minute with no target when Paulinho gathered a pass by Richard Rios on the right side and was given the time and space to enter the box before placing a low shot in the far corner.
This triggered wild celebrations between Palmeiras fans who were the overwhelming majority of the 33,657 crowd and the Sao Paulo side lasted to win the tie despite the fact that captain Gustavos Gomez was slowly blocked.
“That is why he came, so he could play for a long time to decide a game. He should stop again after the tournament,” Ferreira said for Paulinho, who has struggled with injury from Palmeiras’ signature at the beginning of the year.
The winners of Copa Libertadores in 2020 and 2021, Palmeiras will now hope to match the feat of their Brazilian opponents Flamengo, who defeated Chelsea during the group stage.
The action of the last 16 continues on Sunday, when European champions of Paris Saint-Germain take over Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in Atlanta. Later in Bayern Munich faces Flamengo in Miami.
