Cara Buono, who stars as Karen Wheeler; Stranger Thingshas remarkable development in season five, admitting that some opportunities remained unexplored.
The 54-year-old actress plays the mother of Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher).
In conversation with him People magazine, Buono said there is one character she would love to see Karen have more of a relationship with.
“I would have loved more time with Joyce,” Buono said, referring to her character Winona Ryder, who is mom to Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Will Byers (Noah Snapp).
He added: “In Season 1, when Karen brings the pot and we’re talking, I would have loved to have [more] scenes with Winona.”
THE Gladiator actress continued to gush about the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star, saying, “First of all, I think she’s a fantastic actress. And I think for the characters, there could have been some really, really interesting scenes and conversations between them.”
Buono said their relationship is very similar to the ’80s era, as they only talk when “just occasionally checking to see if each other has seen each other’s kids,” as Mike and Will are best friends, along with Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin).
He went on to say that “a heart to heart would be a really interesting conversation.” Both mothers are with each other “in good times and bad, like a normal day in Hawkins.”
Karen, who was seemingly oblivious to her children’s problems earlier, finally made her emotional awakening in season five when her youngest daughter, Holly, was attacked by the Demogorgon and taken from the Wheelers’ home to the Upside Down in Volume 1.
Volume one of Stranger Things Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix. The second volume premieres on December 25th, followed by the finale on December 31st.
