Some Americans may be in serious jeopardy with their family Thanksgiving breakfast as grocery stores are reportedly facing a nationwide egg shortage due to bird flu.
Although the supply of eggs appears to be stable in most areas of the country, some areas are experiencing a dairy crisis. According to NBC Newsthe shortage occurred as a result of rising egg prices, feed and empty shelves in areas of Denver, Miami and New York, it was reported Gizmodo.
However, the single biggest reason behind the rarity is bird flu, experts said.
“Bird flu is by far the biggest factor affecting egg prices right now,” said agricultural economist Bernt Nelson. NBC News. “In the last two months alone, we have seen about 10 million birds alone infected with the virus. And as we move forward and the migration continues, we’ll always be watching to see what happens with bird flu.”
Highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza A strains have begun to spread increasingly among wild birds and domestic poultry in the US since 2022.
Outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in poultry have been observed in 48 states during this time period.
Additionally, more recently this year, H5N1 has begun to cause large outbreaks in dairy cattle.
Although the virus does not spread easily between humans (for now, at least), there have also been human cases of H5N1 linked to these animal outbreaks.
According to the American Egg Board, the nation’s overall egg supply is good, however, these outbreaks have had a real impact.
Additionally, a USDA report in July found that the nation’s total egg production was down 2.6 percent compared to last year, which also cited bird flu as a major factor.
