After nearly two decades of ranking as either the richest or second-richest person on the annual Forbes 400 list of America’s richest people since 1990, billionaire Bill Gates no longer even makes the publication’s top 10 list.

Gates, although he has a huge fortune of $107 billion, his new ranking in the new Forbes The list has dropped to No. 9 this year, from No. 6 a year ago, according to reports Forbes.

As a result, Gates is now ranked No. 12, the first time he has fallen out of the world’s top ten richest people since 1991.

Divorce from Melinda French Gates

One of the major reasons for his downfall turned out to be his 2021 divorce from Melinda French Gates after 27 years of marriage.

After French Gates announced that she was stepping down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, it was also reported that she would receive an additional $12.5 billion for her philanthropic efforts.

Melinda did not say where the funds were coming from or when she would receive them. However, it was learned by Forbes that these funds were not a transfer of assets of the Gates Foundation. Instead, they came from Gates, and it appeared that the funds had already been transferred by him.

In addition, the previous estimate of the divorce settlement that French Gates received has almost tripled Forbes.

French Gates’ net worth has grown to about $29 billion, up from $10.3 billion a year ago, from Forbes based on this new information. This makes her the ninth richest woman in the country.

It is also worth noting that Gates predicted his own downfall in the Forbes ranking in a broad discussion at Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy in September 2022.

At the time, Gates said he planned to continue giving away more of his fortune and continue to do so until he leaves the Forbes list of billionaires.
