US President Joe Biden gave his first interview since dropping out of the presidential race and went into detail about why he decided to drop out of his re-election bid.
Biden proceeded to record it CBS News Sunday Morning show and revealed that his decision to drop out of the US election race was made solely so that the Democratic Party could tackle the most immediate task without distraction and that is defeating Donald Trump on November 5th.
“The polls that we had shown it was a neck and neck race, it would have ended […] But what happened was, some of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought I was going to hurt them in the races,” the president said. CBS.
President Biden also explained how his candidacy would distract from the real work, saying, “And I was worried if I stayed in the race, that would be the point. You would interview me for “Why [former speaker of the House of Representatives] Nancy Pelosi said…” “Why did so-and-so do…” And I thought that would be a real distraction,” Biden added.
The president had withdrawn from his re-election campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee in July after being pressured — both publicly and privately — by members of his own party to drop out of the race.
However, during the interview, Biden argued that the main reason behind backing down and letting Harris take the lead was to preserve democracy and defeat former President Trump, who is running for the presidency Republican Party.
“I thought it was important. Because, although it is a great honor to be president, I think I have an obligation to the country to do what [is] the most important thing you can do, and that is, we have to, we have to, we have to beat Trump.”
