BERLIN:
Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller scored twice on his 400th Bundesliga start and Harry Kane hit his 33rd league goal of the season in a 5-1 win at Union Berlin on Saturday.
Leon Goretzka and 18-year-old Mathys Tel were also on target as manager Thomas Tuchel capped a successful week with a place in the Champions League semi-finals and a comfortable win on the road.
Second-placed Bayern conceded the title to Bayer Leverkusen last week but have reached 66 points from 30 games, three points clear of VfB Stuttgart who visit Werder Bremen on Sunday.
“We’re happy. It’s been a perfect week for us,” Tuchel said. “To come here and win like that was definitely not a given, well done to the lads. It was a team performance in a tough game.”
Bayern took the lead on the half-hour when Tel’s pass in the box was released by Muller and Goretzka fired a shot off the underside of the bar against relegation-threatened Union. Kane scored the second with a 30-yard free-kick and it was more of the same in the second half as Erik Maxime Tsoupo-Moting’s cross was headed home by Muller.
The teenager Thel finished from Kane’s cross just past the hour mark before a rampant Bayern added a fifth through Muller. Yorbe Vertessen scored a consolation for the hosts who sit three points above the relegation play-off spot.
RB Leipzig moved three points clear of fourth place in the Champions League qualifiers with a 2-1 win at Heidenheim, although they have played a game more than fifth-placed Borussia Dortmund, who host champions Leverkusen on Sunday. Lois Openda’s 23rd goal of the season five minutes from time sealed victory for Leipzig. Bottom side Darmstadt ended a 22-game winless streak as they secured a 2-0 away win at second-tier Cologne.
Christoph Klarer and Oscar Vilhelmsson scored second-half goals to leave Darmstadt nine points clear of the relegation play-off spot with four games remaining. Jonas Wind’s first Bundesliga goal since November secured a 1-0 win for Wolfsburg over Bochum to move his side five points clear of the relegation play-off spot.
Robin Haack hit a hat-trick for Borussia Monchengladbach but it still ended in defeat as Hoffenheim won a seven-goal thriller 4-3 after Anton Stach scored an added-time winner.
