Dhaka: The Bangladeshi army said on Saturday that the arrest warrants issued against senior officers had influenced the morale of the soldiers before the election, but pledged to support justice in the midst of growing tensions.
On Wednesday, the Bangladeshi International Court of Justice (ICT) issued warrants for two dozen military officers on their alleged role in the imposed disappearances during the power of Prime Minister Sheikh Hassina.
The Court of Justice has prosecuted former higher evidence associated with the removal of the Hasina government and now the Awami League party.
The warrants followed a verification of the Research Committee for more than 250 cases of disappearances allegedly carried out by the Security Forces, extending to the 15 years that Hasina’s Awami League was in power.
General MD Hakimuzzaman, the General Manager of the Army, acknowledged the impact of the court’s movement.
“I cannot deny that the arrest warrants against military officers affect us, but we will remain firm in ensuring justice,” Hakimuzzaman told reporters in Dhaka.
The provisional government, led by Nobel Peace Prize -winning Muhamad Yunus, has set up the committee to investigate cases of disappearances and has so far received about 1,700 complaints.
Hakimuzzaman said 15 officers had been detained after the warrants.
“They are detached from their families and are kept in high security with guards and other necessary arrangements,” he said.
Officers are expected to appear before ICT on October 22.
“There are some issues that need to be resolved soon and we will look for answers from the right authority,” Hakimuzzaman added.
This marks the first time that such a large number of senior former and security officials are likely to face political tests in Bangladesh.
