Bangladesh starts the first trial of Sheikh Hasina Aides

Bangladesh began the first trial of a special court on Sunday, prosecuted former upper figures linked to the remote government of Sheikh Hasina, the prosecutor said.

The capital of the capital Dhaka was officially charged with eight police officials in relation to the murder of six protesters on August 5 last year, the day Hassina left the country as protesters destroyed her palace.

Eight men are charged with crimes against humanity. Four are in custody and four are tested in absentia.

“The official trial has begun,” said Tajul Islam, head of the Bangladeshi International Crimes Court (ICT). “The prosecution believes that this prosecution will be able to prove the crimes suffered by the accused.”

It is the first official category in any case related to the murders during the uprising led by the student, which ended the Hasina rule for 15 years.

Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August 2024, when the Hasina government launched a violent campaign for the silence of protesters, according to the United Nations.

The list of trials include former Dhaka police commissioner Habibur Rahman, who is among those who have been tested in absentia.

Hassina also left the helicopter to India, her old ally. It remains in self -imposed exile, defying Dhaka’s request to face charges of crimes against humanity.

‘Command Liability’

The launch of Hasina government tests is a key issue of many of the political parties that now launch power, as the South Asian nation expects elections that the provisional government has been sworn in will take place before June 2026.

Islam said the eight men were charged with “different responsibilities”, including the highest of “superior command responsibility, some for direct orders … [and] Some for participation. “

He said he was sure of a successful persecution.

“We have submitted so much information that is needed to prove crimes against humanity, both in national and international standard,” he said.

Among these elements, he said, were the videos of violence, as well as Hasina’s vocal recordings in “conversations with different people where he ordered the murder of protesters using power and deadly weapons.”

The ICTs were created by Hasina in 2009, condemned many prominent political opponents in the coming years and was widely regarded as a means of Hasina to eliminate opponents.
