The Balochistan Investment and Trade Expo — branded BITE 2026 — will be held this month in what will be the province’s first-ever dedicated trade and investment event, organised by the Balochistan Board of Investment and Trade in collaboration with Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (Arab News; Dawn). The expo will bring together investors, financial institutions, diplomats, development partners, academic institutions, startups, and entrepreneurs to showcase the province’s investment potential across minerals, industrial development, agriculture, and tourism.
Balochistan covers 44 percent of Pakistan’s total land area and holds the country’s largest reserves of natural gas, coal, copper, and gold. The Reko Diq copper-gold project — one of the largest undeveloped copper reserves in the world, in which Barrick Gold holds the operating concession alongside the Balochistan government and federal government — is the flagship of the province’s mining ambitions. The Saindak copper-gold mine is already in production under a Chinese-operated concession. Gwadar Port, the southwestern terminus of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, sits in Balochistan and anchors the CPEC connectivity framework.
The gap between resource endowment and economic development in Balochistan is among the starkest in Pakistan. The province has the country’s lowest literacy and human development indicators, the highest rates of poverty, and has been the site of a persistent low-grade insurgency — currently in its fifth generation — that has deterred private investment and complicated project implementation for decades. High-profile attacks on CPEC workers and Chinese nationals in Balochistan have periodically halted infrastructure projects and strained the Pakistan-China security relationship.
BITE 2026 is positioned by the Balochistan government as a signal that conditions are stabilising sufficiently to re-engage domestic and international investors. Whether the expo translates into binding investment commitments — or remains primarily a platform event — will depend on the investment climate that follows. The expo is expected to feature panel discussions, one-on-one investor meetings, and a startup competition targeting Balochistan-based entrepreneurs (Daily Independent).
