Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir has said the armed forces are ready to assist the National Disaster Management Authority and the civil administration in relief operations (Geo News).
He made the remarks during a visit to the National Emergencies Operation Centre at NDMA headquarters, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations.
Munir commended the authority’s efforts to strengthen national disaster management capacity, and emphasised readiness, effective inter-agency coordination and swift response to safeguard lives and critical infrastructure.
The visit comes with the monsoon season well past its worst point on record for this year. The Meteorological Department has warned that isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall could trigger urban flooding, flash floods and landslides across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, listing Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar and Nowshera among areas at risk of inundation.
Punjab’s rivers have been running high, with low-level flooding recorded in the Indus at Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa, and the provincial disaster authority has told riverside residents to move to safer ground.
Army aviation has already been committed to one operation this month, flying recovery missions on Broad Peak after the avalanche that killed the mountaineer Nirmal Purja and nine others.
