American Airlines sends the jet too big to Naples, diverts the flight to Rome
Listen to the article

An American Airline Transatlantic flight intended for Naples, Italy, was forced to divert to Rome after the airline sent an aircraft too large to the planned airport, resulting in passengers in two hours in their final destination.

Flight 780 departed from Philadelphia on Monday night at 19:42 local time, scheduled to land in Naples at 10:00 on Tuesday morning. However, just 70 miles from its destination, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was removed from the southern Italian city and diverted north to Rome Airport Fiumicino, landing around 09:45.

US airlines attributed the diversion to “business restrictions”. Flight data examined by the Flightradar24 Air Force Monitoring Service confirm that the aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-9, a variant usually greater than Boeing 787-8, which usually serves the route.

While both aircraft share similar fins, 787-9 are 20 feet longer and, decisively, requires a higher category of emergency waiting mode during landing. According to the standards set by Boeing and the International Civil Aviation Organization, 787-9 requires a rescue and fire 9 (RFFS) rescue service, while Naples International Airport provides a 8-EPA category only for smaller aircraft such as 787-8.

The enthusiastic aircraft and commentator @xjonnyc brought attention to the incident on the social media platform for the first time, citing airport sources confirming that the largest variant 787-9 is not allowed to land in Naples.

After a safe landing in Rome, the passengers were transported to Naples by bus – a trip of about 145 miles lasting two hours. American Airlines apologized, stating: “We apologize to our clients for this disorder on their journey.”

The farmed aircraft later left Rome for Chicago as a flight 111, repeating its transatlantic actions.

The incident marks the second time this week that the passengers were rebuilt by bus deductions. In a separate case on Wednesday, a Ryanair flight to Europe is diverted due to storm -caused turmoil, with passengers transporting roads from Memmingen, Germany to Milan.
