Sixth seed Alexander Zverev beat Carlos Alcaraz, the world’s second-ranked player, in an Australian Open quarter-final, giving him a stunning four-set win in a thrilling match.

In the quarter-finals of the tournament, crowd favorite Alcaraz was bulldozed by German Zverev 6-4 in straight sets at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena early on Thursday.

The German dominated Alcaraz 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(7-2), taking control from the start, sweeping through the opening two sets with an impressive display of strength at Melbourne Park against Spanish World No. 2. .

Zverev’s serving ability was particularly notable as he consistently landed first serves with precision throughout the match. His dynamic approach to the game proved successful, enabling him to take advantage of Alcaraz’s mistakes.

After losing the first two sets one-sidedly, the Spaniard made an impressive comeback as he closed out the third set 7-6(2) after a long battle.

For once, it looked like the world number two would finally get back into the game, but Zverev’s outstanding show in the fourth set saw to it that Alcaraz’s stamina stopped there.

“I’m playing one of the best players in the world. Especially the last 2 years,” Zverev said after the match. “He was number 1 or number 2. He has won 2 grand slams. When you’re up 6-1 6-3 5-2 you start thinking. We are all humans. It’s a great honor to play guys like him.

“When you start winning, your brain starts going. It’s not always helpful, but very happy to finish the race.”

Zverev reached his seventh Grand Slam semi-final where he will now face 26th-ranked world number three Daniil Medvedev.
