  • UPU reports suspensions due to vague US transit procedures.
  • Since Friday, shippers must prepay the US customs duties.
  • Germany’s DHL warns of additional checks on free items.

Geneva: At least 25 countries have decided to suspend package traditions to the United States, as concern is increasing on the impact of President Donald Trump’s sloping invoices, a UN body said on Tuesday.

Trump’s administration said late last month that it would abolish a tax exemption in small packages entering the United States since August 29.

The move caused a stirring announcement by postal services, including France, Britain, Germany, Italy, India, Australia and Japan, that most US -related packages would no longer be accepted.

The United Nations Catholic Postal Association said it had already been informed by 25 member states that their postal bodies “have suspended their outbound postal services in the US, citing uncertainties specifically related to transit services.”

He said the suspensions would remain in force until there is more clarity in how US authorities are planning to implement the announced measures.

UPU did not provide a postal service list of which he had heard.

‘Major operational changes’

The Organization, founded in 1874 and counts 192 Member States, warned that new US measures would “involve significant operational changes for postal bodies worldwide”.

On Friday, UPU said the measures will require postal carriers providing packages to the United States “to collect duties from shippers in advance”, on behalf of the US Customs and Border Protection.

India’s Ministry of Communications said over the weekend that Trump’s executive order issued last month demands that transport carriers or other “specialized places” approved by US authorities to collect and deliver tariff duties.

However, “several critical procedures related to the identification of” specialized parts “and the mechanisms for collection and remittances remain indefinitely,” he said in a statement.

According to new US measures, individual customers will still be able to send up to $ 100 documents and items as gifts in the country without being taxed.

But anything above this value is expected to be hurt by the same invoices applied to other imports from the country of shipping.

This means 15% for European Union countries and 50% for India.

And the German DHL postal service warned last week that even free items would be subject to additional checks to prevent the service used for commercial goods.

viable solutions

UPU stressed that “it has taken all possible measures to prepare its members’ countries for the impact (new measures) may have on their postal flows”.

UPU leader Masahiko Metoki had sent a letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday to convey members’ concerns about business disorders, he said.

Larking the short timetable and expressing particular concern about the impact on the delivery of e -commerce data, the Union said that “it is working with the US authorities to ensure that the information on the operational requirements of the measures is effectively transmitted to other member states”.

At the same time, he stated that he is working with the “relevant postal stakeholders” to help find sustainable solutions, including an initiative aimed at developing a system to facilitate collection and scope throughout its network.
