Jeddah: President Volodymyr Zelenskiy landed in Saudi Arabia on Monday to meet Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the day before the talks between Ukraine and US officials who Washington expects to make significant progress in the war.
The United States, when Ukraine’s main ally has increased its policies during the war in its declared pursuit of rapid ending, engaging directly with Moscow while stopping military assistance and exchange of information on Kiev.
Addressing the new approach to the White House, Ukraine prompted “realistic” relations after a devastating oval office meeting between Zelenskiy and US President Donald Trump, went to an academic event last month.
Zelenskiy is later expected on Monday to meet the Prince of Saudi Arabia, whose country has played mediation roles from Russia’s invasion in 2022, including brokerage brokerage and hosting of Moscow and Moscow.
Tuesday talks among Ukraine officials are the first official meeting of White’s Whitenskiy meeting and Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, said he had great hopes in talks.
“I think we are going there with the expectation that we will make significant progress,” Witkoff said in an interview with Fox News.
Asked if he believed Zelenskiy would return to the US to sign a mineral agreement this week, Witkoff said: “I am really optimistic. All signs are very, very positive.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to journalists on the way to Jeddah on Monday, reflects this optimism, although he stressed that there were even more details to process the mineral agreement.
Under the huge pressure from Trump, Zelenskiy has pain to show that they are on the same page, despite the fact that he failed to win the US security guarantees that Kiev considers to be vital for any peace agreement.
Zelenskiy said he would not attend Tuesday talks with US officials and that the Ukrainian delegation would include his staff leader, foreign ministers and defense and a leading military official in the Presidential Administration.
“For our part, we are fully committed to constructive dialogue and hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps,” Zelenskiy said in a position in X.
“The realistic sentences are on the table. The key is to move quickly and effectively.”
US officials said they were planning to use the meeting with the Ukrainians in part to determine whether Kiev is willing to make significant concessions to Russia to end the war.
One US official said: “We want to see if the Ukrainians are interested not only in peace, but in a realistic peace.”
Trump said on Sunday that he was expecting good results from upcoming talks, adding that Washington had “exactly” ended a suspension of the exchange of information with Kiev.
Context for agreement
Witkoff, who has organized the conversations, said the idea is to “download a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire”.
Zelenskiy called for a truce in the air and sea, as well as an exchange of prisoners, in what he says could be a test of Russia’s commitment to end the war.
Moscow rejected the idea of a temporary truce, which was also proposed by Britain and France, saying it was an attempt to buy time for Kiev and to prevent their military collapse.
Zelenskiy said Kiev is ready to sign US minerals, which would create a joint fund from the sale of Ukrainian minerals. Washington says it is important to ensure the continued US support.
With this support, Zelenskiy urges his European allies to increase their support as the position of the Kiev battle is deteriorating and is facing increasing pressure to retreat from the Kursk area of Russia.
Ukrainian troops that entered the Kursk area last summer are almost surrounded by Russian forces, open source maps show.
However, KIEB’s leading general Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Monday that his troops in the Kursk area are not in danger of surrounding, despite the recent opposite of the Russian forces included by North Korea troops.
Russia holds around one fifth of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea annexed in 2014 and its troops are also pushing in the eastern part of Donetsk, accelerating strikes and missiles in cities and cities away from the forehead.
Russia started 1,200 aerial photographs, about 870 attack aircraft and more than 80 rockets in Ukraine only last week, Zelenskiy said.
