- The Prime Minister says “this is not a good time to make a big decision”.
- Zaka Ashraf’s four-month term ends today.
- Shahid Afridi is likely to get an important role in the PCB.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Anwaar-Ul-Haq Kakar on Friday confirmed that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf will retain his post till the end of the ongoing ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. The news mentionted.
Ashraf, who replaced Najam Sethi as the PCB chief in July this year, was set to bid farewell to the top post after his four-month tenure ends today (Saturday).
However, the government has decided that Ashraf’s fate will be reassessed after the World Cup.
The confirmation from the prime minister, who is also the Patron of the Board, came during an interview on a private television channel on Friday.
“An important event is going on. Right now, we don’t want to make big decisions. Once the World Cup is over, his situation will be reassessed. I don’t think we’re in a position right now to make a big decision. Sometimes you have to to take decisions keeping in mind the doctrine of necessity,” Chief Minister Kakar said.
The 2023 World Cup ends on November 19 and it is widely believed that Xhaka’s extension depends on the Pakistan cricket team’s performance in the World Cup.
Zhaka’s tenure as PCB MC chairman ends today but he is expected to get a 15-day extension to attend the ICC Board of Governors meeting scheduled in India on November 17-18.
The development comes at a time when he is facing allegations of gross misconduct and unconstitutional decisions by a member of his own management committee.
Zulfiqar Malik, a member of the management committee, made these allegations in an email addressed to Ashraf and the management committee, ESPNcricinfo mentionted.
Meanwhile, former opener Shahid Afridi is likely to get a “key role” in the PCB after his meeting with the prime minister. The news reported on Thursday.
The board and Ashraf have been embroiled in controversy following the resignation of former chief selector Inzamam ul Haq and Green Shirts skipper Babar Azam’s private conversation with a senior PCB official was leaked.
