ISLAMABAD: Yousaf Raza Gilani’s victory has given the Pakistan Democratic Movement political momentum, however, it still remains to be seen who will be elected as Chairman Senate.
The PTI is the largest party in the Senate with 25 Senators, however, PTI and it’s allies have 48 senators while the opposition alliance has 52 senators, giving them a majority of 4 in the Upper House.
Political pundits predict that Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani is tipped to become Senate Chairman and that some Senators belonging to the ruling coalition might also vote for him.
An opposition leader told Dawn that after the victory of Yousaf Raza Gilani against Hafeez Sheikh, incumbent Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani must be having sleepless nights.
It is still not clear who the PDM’s candidate for Senate Chairman will be. If Gilani is not selected as the candidate, then the post might go to the PML-N or the JUI-F, who have significant numbers in the Senate.
Political analysts believe that the real test of unity for the PDM will be in appointing people at key posts.
Sources from PTI told The Pakistan Daily that many senior party members do not want to see Sadiq Sanjrani as Senate Chairman since he was initially, Zardari’s candidate.
