Roc-a-Fella Records co-founder Dame Dash claims JAY-Z opposed Kanye West joining the label.
Roc-a-Fella introduced Kanye West as a hip-hop heavyweight after making a name for himself as a producer for churning out irresistible beats. However, Dame Dash, the label’s co-founder, caused controversy after claiming he had to compete for the Chicago rap star with JAY-Z, who was against his entry.
Sharing his thoughts on Instagram Live, the 52-year-old shared, “I almost couldn’t sign Kanye. I had to get a vote. I had to fight to get Kanye off. I had to fight Lyor [Cohen] and JAY-Z,” he asserted. “They didn’t want this man out.”
Amidst the controversy, the veteran music executive said he decided to leave the label, “Well, the thing was, I said, ‘Yeah, I’m not going to be in a place where I have to fight to drop this guy.’
“Like I had to fight to get Jay out, fight to get Rachel Roy out, fight to get Cam out. Everything I ever had to put up with was against the nerds telling me not to turn it off,” she said. added.
Instead, the Empire State of Mind rapper shot down the idea that he objected to the Grammy winner signing, “Let’s get this thing straight first for Dame and Kanye and all of us. We all had a conversation about Kanye and whether to sign him. sign. No. somebody knew what was going to happen with Kanye. Not Dame, not me, not Biggs,” he told XXL in 2009.
He continued, “So we all sat down and said, ‘Let’s at least sign so we can keep the tracks at home. It’s just good work.” And Dame said, “We can put Beans and Cam in, surround him and make this kind of album.” I wasn’t saying don’t sign Kanye; I was saying, at least keep the beats in-house, if not what else”.
However, it’s generally believed that the labels – initially – saw Kanye as a top producer and apparently overrode his rapper ambitions, according to HipHopDx.
