Residents of around a dozen villages in Punjab are being evacuated by boat as floodwater surrounds their homes, with volunteer crews rather than official teams conducting much of the rescue effort (Geo News).
“It has been four days, and no rescue team has reached us,” said Iqra Salman, 32. “We have no electricity, no clean water, and now we have completely run out of food supplies. We are surrounded by floodwater on all sides.”
Haris Dar, a volunteer rescuer working beside what the report describes as a lake-like expanse of brown water, said four rescue boats were actively evacuating people stranded by the flooding and recovering belongings.
Those brought to safety are not necessarily comfortable. Displaced families are sleeping in small tents in humid heat, pitched on the strip between the floodwater and the road.
Flood-related incidents, including drowning and house collapses, have killed 109 people across Pakistan since the monsoon season opened on June 26, according to official disaster agency figures. Around a third of those deaths are in Punjab.
The evacuations are running as the Meteorological Department forecasts a further widespread spell of monsoon rain from July 29, with heavy falls expected across much of the province.
