The United Nations Food Service has confirmed that all its food in the Gaza Strip has been exhausted as Israel’s blockade enters the eighth week, pushing over 400,000 people closer to hunger.
The World Food Program (WFP) said it delivered its finish food finish to community cuisines earlier this week. These meals are expected to be completely exhausted in a few days.
“The situation in the Gaza Strip has reached a point again,” the WFP said in a statement on Friday. “People are running out of ways to deal with, and the fragile profits made during the short ceasefire have unfolded.”
The organization warned that, unless humanitarian access is restored immediately, it would be forced to suspend all the remaining food aid business.
During the temporary ceasefire earlier this year, limited supplies were stored. But these stocks are now exhausted. According to WFP data, the cost of basic foodstuffs increased by 1,400 percent, making it a little to be inaccessible to most families.
Local help kitchens, which have already been stretched, now feed only half of the population and provide only one quarter of their daily calorie needs.
The Gaza Mass Government Office said at least 52 people – 50 of whom have already died of hunger or malnutrition. Over a million children in Gaza face daily food insecurity.
The reference from the city of Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud said hunger is becoming more and more visible on the streets. “People are hungry. They are already distribution supplies,” he said. “Not only organizations are. They are also the families running from food.”
The WFP previously supported 25 bakeries across Gaza, but everyone was forced to close on March 31 due to lack of flour and fuel cooking. The parcels of home food, intended to supply families for two weeks, were also fully distributed earlier that month.
No help – humanitarian or commercial – entered Gaza since March 2, when Israel sealed all border crossings. More than 116,000 metric tons of food are currently stored by WFP and partners, ready to enter Gaza as soon as access to access.
Israeli officials have defended the exclusion, as it is necessary, to prevent Hamas access to help supplies, although the team denies any diversion of food. Last week, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the closure was designed to “push” Hamas into an agreement.
The international conviction of the strategy has increased. On Wednesday, Germany, France and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement calling for “unacceptable” exclusion and warning that it increases the risk of mass starvation and manifestations.
The UN Human Rights Office said that the combined effects of exclusion, bombing and the destruction of the basic infrastructure may equalize with the collective punishment of 2.2 million inhabitants of Gaza.
He said the Israeli army has deliberately targeted vital political infrastructure, including water pipelines, drainage systems, ambulances and machinery used in rescue operations, further blocking humanitarian efforts.
Between April 21 and 22, Israeli air attacks destroyed 36 relief vehicles and machines used for water delivery, sewer management and clearing ruins in three governments in Gaza, UN officials said.
Attacks on homes and shelters have also escalated. Between the mid -March and late April, there were 229 recorded strikes in residential buildings and 91 in scene camps for displaced citizens.
In the meantime, violence continues to inflammation on the West Bank. UN officials report growing settlers and Israeli military operations, including a large -scale campaign in Jenin and Tulkarm refugee camps, now entering the third month. Rights groups say they may be equivalent to violent transfer under international law.
In Gaza, there remains an attempt to be caused. A Hamas delegation is expected in Cairo this weekend for talks between Egypt. The team says it will not agree on a ceasefire of fire that excludes a complete Israeli withdrawal and a permanent end to hostilities. Israel has so far only provides temporary pauses in exchange for hostage versions.
As of October 7, 2023, more than 51,439 Palestinians were killed and 117,416 were injured in Gaza, according to Palestinian authorities. Israeli strikes, as the most recent ceasefire that collapsed on March 18 have killed more than 1,900 people.
With the hunger now threatened, the WFP has requested immediate access, saying that food help is ready to surrender if corridors were opened.
“WFP urges all parties to prioritize the needs of civilians and allow the help to enter Gaza immediately and support their obligations under international humanitarian law,” the organization said.
