Umar Sheikh’s despotic rule as CCPO Lahore comes to an end

LAHORE: The notification for the removal of Umar Sheikh as CCPO Lahore has been issued, sources within the Punjab government confirmed to The Pakistan Daily.

Ghulam Mehmood Dogar, who previously served as DIG Technical Procurement has been appointed as the new CCPO Lahore.

Umar Sheikh, who is considered to be one of the most controversial police officers in the history of Punjab police remained mired in multiple controversies during his short stint as Lahore’s top cop.

Considered to hold immense sway within several power corridors, Umar Sheikh was successful in the removal of his own boss, former IG Punjab Shoaib Dastagir after a public rift.

Umar Sheikh was also the subject of intense criticism after he passed inconsiderate comments regarding the motorway rape victim alleging that the victim should not have travelled alone.

Intelligence Bureau report on Umar Sheikh

Even before the appointment, an Intelligence Bureau report termed Sheikh as, a gambler, womaniser and inherently corrupt but Sheikh was still able to secure his appointment as CCPO Lahore.

In an television interview, Prime Minister Imran Khan confirmed that he had appointed Sheikh to protect his brother in law’s land which had been targeted by land grabbers.

Even after intense campaigns to remove Umar Sheikh, Prime Minister Khan stood by Sheikh for several months before giving into pressure after continuous reports of Umar Sheikh’s abusive and violent outbursts, sometimes against his own team members.

As CCPO Lahore, Umar Sheikh was recorded abusing a female who he claimed he had helped earlier. Sheikh was also unable to develop cordial relations with his own team members after he had his own junior officer arrested after a minor argument.
