Russian and Ukrainian officials are set to sit on Monday in the Turkish city of Constantinople for the second round of immediate peace talks from 2022, but the two sides are still far from how to end the war and the battles are being reinforced.
US President Donald Trump has asked Russia and Ukraine to make peace, but so far they have not been and the White House has repeatedly warned that the United States will “walk” from the war if the two sides are too stubborn to reach a peacekeep.
The first round of talks on May 16 attributed the largest exchange of prisoners of war, but no sign of peace – or even a ceasefire, as both sides merely determined their own initial negotiating positions.
After keeping people guessing whether Ukraine would even appear for the second round, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Defense Minister Rustem Umerov would meet with Russian officials in Istanbul.
The Russian delegation will be the head of Kremlin’s assistant Vladimir Mentinsky, who after the first round cited French general and politician Napoleon Bonaparte to claim that war and negotiations should always be held at the same time.
On Sunday, Ukraine began one of the most ambitious attacks on the war, aimed at the Russian nuclear bombing bombers in Siberia and other military bases, while the Kremlin launched 472 drones in Ukraine in the Ukraine Air Force.
The idea of immediate talks was first proposed by President Vladimir Putin after Ukraine and European powers called for an agreement to agree on a cessation of the Kremlin.
Putin said that Russia would write a memorandum that would determine the widespread outlines of a possible peace agreement and will only discuss a ceasefire.
Kiev said on the weekend that he was still waiting for the Russian memorial plan.
Medinsky, the head of Kremlin negotiator, said Sunday that Moscow had received a Ukrainian Memorandum plan and told Russia’s RIA news agency that the Kremlin would react to it on Monday.
According to envoy Trump Keith Kellogg, the two sides will present the corresponding documents describing their ideas for peace, although it is clear that after three years of Moscow and Kiev they remain far away.
Kellogg said the US would participate in talks and that even representatives of Britain, France and Germany would be very much, though it was not clear at what level the United States would be represented.
The Ukrainian delegation will also include the Deputy Foreign Minister, as well as several military and information officials, according to Zelenskiy’s executive order on Sunday.
In June last year, Putin began his initial terms for a direct end to the war: Ukraine must abandon his ambitions to NATO and withdraw all his troops from the whole territory of the four Ukrainian areas that claim and mainly control.
Ukrainian negotiators in Istanbul will present to the Russian side a proposed march map to achieve a constant peace settlement, according to a copy of the document reported by Reuters.
According to the document, there will be no restrictions on Ukraine’s military force after a peace agreement, there is no international recognition of Russian sovereignty in parts of Ukraine obtained by Moscow forces and compensation for Ukraine.
The document also stated that the current position of the first line would be the starting point for negotiations on the territory.
Russia currently controls just below one fifth of Ukraine, or about 113,100 square kilometers, about the same size as the US state of Ohio.
Putin ordered tens of thousands of troops to invade Ukraine in February 2022 after eight years of battle in eastern Ukraine among Russian candidates and Ukrainian troops. The United States says over 1.2 million people were killed and injured in war in 2022.
Trump called Putin “crazy” and violates Zelenskiy to the public at the Oval Office, but the US President has also said that he believes that peace is possible and that if Putin is delayed then he could impose harsh sanctions on Russia.
