Medicare and Medicaid Services said on Friday that it did not go ahead with a proposal submitted by Biden’s administration to cover Medicare for weight loss drugs such as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy.

Novo’s Novo shares declined by 1.4% in post -purchase transactions, while those of Eli Lilly who make drug obesity decreased by 3.1%.

The proposal would allow more Americans to withstand new GLP-1 drugs that have been shown to reduce weight by 20% and prevent type 2 diabetes, but cost up to $ 1,000 a month without insurance coverage.

Medicare, the government’s health insurance plan for people aged 65 years or older or who have disabilities, currently covers the use of GLP-1 drugs such as Lilly’s Mounjaro and Novo Ozempic for situations such as diabetes, but not the versions of these drugs approved for the treatment of obesity.

Bernstein Courtney Breen’s analyst said the depreciation of the proposal was “it is not surprising”, adding that “by negotiating pharmaceutical tariffs, it is not time for the administration to give without getting”.

Lilly said in a statement that she was frustrated by the move and that “she will continue to work with Trump’s administration and Congress leaders to ensure that people living with obesity are covered by Medicare and Medicaid and no longer left behind”.

A Novo Nordisk spokesman said “today’s announcement was limited”, but the company hopes the Trump administration will soon complete the definition of obesity.

“It is important that CMS regulations are aligned with current medical science – and this means that recognizing obesity as a severe chronic illness.”

US Secretary of Health, Robert F Kennedy Jr, said in the past that America should cope with obesity through healthy eating, not medicine.

The CMS also stated that it did not proceed with two other proposals. Which required Medicare providers to analyze the policies of health care in terms of health equality and another that sought Guardrails in artificial intelligence tools amid concerns that they are used to refuse or delay care.
