WASHINGTON:
US President Donald Trump abruptly cut off trade talks with Canada on Friday on tax companies targeting US technology companies, saying it was a “obvious attack” and would set a new pricing percentage in Canadian goods in the following week.
The move is sinking in Canada’s US relations back into chaos after a period of relative tranquility that included a G7 meeting in mid -June, where Prime Minister Trump and Canadian Mark Carney agreed to complete a new financial agreement within 30 days.
It also came just a few hours after the return of US finance minister Scott Bessent hit an optimistic tone for trade, progress had been made with China to revitalize the flow of critical minerals for the US manufacturing sector and other basic tariffs.
The frequently-social growth of Trump’s entry contributions from his return to the office this year has often stunned financial markets and has begun to weigh consumer spending, the US economy’s background.
US stocks fell shortly lower than his back against Canada, but the S&P 500 and Nasdaq managed to close a week.
Trump’s action comes in front of Canada’s plans to start collecting a previous digital service tax on US technology companies, such as Amazon, Meta, Google Alphabet and Apple, among others.
The tax is 3% of digital services revenue that a company receives from Canadian users of over $ 20 million in a calendar year and payments will be retroactive by 2022.
Trump, in a position on the social media platform, called on the tax “an immediate and obvious attack on our country” and said Canada was a “very difficult country to exchange”.
“Based on this intense tax, we end all the discussions about trade with Canada, effectively immediately,” Trump said. “We will let Canada know the invoice that they will pay to work with the United States of America within the next seven days.”
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said negotiations with Canada would not continue to “until they aligned”, adding that the US has “such power in Canada”.
