The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting a broad investigation into deaths possibly linked to Covid-19 vaccines, a spokesman for vaccine-skeptic Donald Trump’s health secretary said on Tuesday.
Since Trump’s appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as health secretary, the US government has launched a major overhaul of vaccine policy, causing growing concern in the medical community.
“The FDA is conducting a thorough investigation, across multiple age groups, of deaths possibly related to vaccines for COVID,” Kennedy’s health and human services spokesman Andrew Nixon told AFP.
Bloomberg and the Washington Post previously reported on the investigation.
The review, which was originally intended to focus on possible child deaths, has sparked controversy in recent weeks after an internal document was leaked in late November.
The memo, attributed to a senior FDA official, claimed that Covid vaccines were linked to at least 10 infant deaths, without providing any evidence.
The effectiveness and safety of the COVID-19 vaccines have been studied and documented worldwide, with rare cases of serious side effects that do not undermine the benefits of the vaccine for most age groups, according to various health authorities around the world.
Nixon declined to elaborate on the methods, data and timeline for the investigation’s completion.
Experts have expressed concern about the FDA’s actions under Kennedy, who is known for spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories.
In 2023, Kennedy called vaccines deadly and claimed without evidence that the virus itself was ethnically “targeted” to harm blacks and whites while sparing Ashkenazi Jews and the Chinese.
