Time magazine named “Architects of Artificial Intelligence” its Person of the Year on Thursday, highlighting US tech titans whose work on cutting-edge artificial intelligence is transforming humanity.
Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk are among the innovators who have “taken hold of the wheel of history, developing technology and making decisions that are reshaping our information landscape, climate and livelihoods,” Time wrote.
One of the magazine’s two covers is an homage to the famous 1932 photograph of blacksmiths casually eating lunch on a steel beam above New York.
In the Time illustration, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, AMD chief Lisa Su, Musk, Huang, Altman as well as Google AI boss Demis Hassabis, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li sit astride the city.
“Racing alongside and against each other, they placed multibillion-dollar bets on one of the largest physical infrastructure projects of all time,” the magazine said of the team.
“They reoriented government policy, changed geopolitical rivalries, and brought the robots into their homes. Artificial intelligence has emerged as arguably the most important tool in great power competition since the advent of nuclear weapons.”
Along with popular AI models like ChatGPT and Claude, Time credits investors like SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, who has sunk billions of dollars into the technology.
Time’s Person of the Year is a recognition of the year’s most influential figure.
The title last year went to President-elect Donald Trump. Others include singer Taylor Swift and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Gravity center of 2025”
According to the magazine, which is owned by Silicon Valley billionaire Marc Benioff, 2025 was the year artificial intelligence went from promise to reality and when ChatGPT usage more than doubled to 10% of the world’s population.
“This is the single most influential technology of our time,” Huang, CEO of chip maker Nvidia — the world’s most valuable company — told Time.
He predicted that AI will eventually grow the global economy from $100 trillion to $500 trillion.
But the magazine also showed the darker side of AI.
Lawsuits claim chatbots have contributed to suicides and mental health crises, sparking debate about “chatbot psychosis,” where users can become delusional and paranoid.
In one case, the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine from California sued OpenAI after he killed himself. They claim that ChatGPT provided information about suicide methods.
Time noted a very looming job shift as more companies scramble to replace workers with artificial intelligence models.
However, the magazine avoided using artificial intelligence to create its cover, opting instead for human artists.
Thomas Hudson, chief analyst at US research firm Forrester, said the choice of Person of the Year rightly reflects the great influence of artificial intelligence this year.
“Artificial intelligence has been the 2025 center of gravity for the economy and the source of endless debates about how it will shape the future of our societies,” he said in a statement.
