LONDON:
The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys dropped on Wednesday, and while there’s a lot to cheer about, some of the choices are simply incredible. First, let’s clap Abbott Elementary, the brilliantly topical comedy in a field of overcooked sitcoms. And Hallelujah, The Gilded Age finally got the nod it deserves. It’s like the Academy just discovered this genius period drama exists. Concerning Morning show, it seems that Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon could be filmed reading the contents of a menu and still be nominated. It must be nice to have that kind of job security.
If you’re thinking, “Wait, didn’t we already do that in 2024?” You’re not losing your mind. actually you would be right. The 75th Primetime Emmys aired this January, a ceremony delayed until September 2023 by last year’s dual actor and writer strikes. Shows that aired between June 2023 and May 2024 have struck gold this time, and the winners will be announced on September 16.

Now, let’s talk about the 2024 nominations. There were swag, surprises, and moments that made me want to throw confetti. The biggest “finally!” of all according to fans? Selena Gomez, who spent two seasons watching her Only murders in the building co-starring Steve Martin and Martin Short rake in nominations, while it got zilch. This year, she’s nominated for best actress in a comedy, and fans are rejoicing after two years of complaints. Many say her goofy acting would be nothing without her deadpan one-liners. However, I disagree. To To me, watching Gomez act is the equivalent of an awkward paper cut. It’s annoying, but I have to power through the rest of my day.

Gomez’s nomination is part of a historic Best Female Comedy category dominated by women of color for the first time. Along with her, we have Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph and Quinta Brunson, any of whom would be a much more deserving winner. Seriously, I’d campaign for them myself if I had the time or the inclination. Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis for Under the bridge and True Detective: Night Country they were also nominations a long time coming as they became the first Indigenous people ever to be nominated in the acting category.

Let’s get to the snubs, shall we? The curse it was gloriously weird and creepy. Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone were impressively annoying as a perfect couple with a dark twist. Stone’s performance was so good that she deserved at least a nomination, but unfortunately, her EGOT dreams were dashed. Fans were outraged that this show received a total no-show. “His closure The curse it is shocking and unforgivable. It blew every other show out of the water,” one fan wrote. Another commented: “Emma Stone was incredible.”

Then there is The gentlemen, a spinoff of the Guy Ritchie film that delivered action and laughs in equal measure. A man dancing in a chicken suit shouldn’t be funny, but this show nailed it. However, it is nowhere to be seen in the nominations. A travesty, I tell you.

Now for the overrated candidates. Mr. and Mrs. Smith it was like watching paint dry, another argument for why some things shouldn’t deserve a remake. And don’t get me started Palm Royale which scored 11 nominations, including one for Kristen Wiig. This show was a screaming mess of 1960s and convoluted plots. This nomination slot could have gone to so many better comedies, but here we are.

As for who I’m cheering for, that would have to do with anyone and anything The bear. Known for their clean sweeps at award shows, The bear she’s nominated in every comedy category there is. While I’ll never understand why it’s classified as a comedy, the show is an anxiety-inducing, teeth-gnashing nightmare that keeps you on the edge of your seat. But whatever they choose to call themselves, I’ll take it as the seasons continue to roll.
