Reduce distribution damage
Federal Energy Minister Owais Leghari, at a press conference, said effective government has allowed the government to reduce losses in the energy distribution system.
He said the losses amounting to 591 billion Rs last year have been reduced to RS399 billions. “We had set a goal to reduce losses by 100 billion Rs,” Leghari said.
He added that last year, all Discos failed to recover 315 billion Rs, while electricity theft was 276 billion Rs.
According to the minister, during the financial year 2023-24, distribution companies suffered losses of 591 billion Rs. “We have secured the value of the discos,” Leghari said, adding that new councils and reforms that started with the Prime Minister’s instructions were created.
“In 2024-25, losses in distribution companies decreased by 191 billion Rs, reducing them to 399 billion Rs,” he noted. The minister also said that electricity theft even prevails in the industrial sector and that the stealing of $ 60 billion is only prevented in Gujranwala.
“This year, our full focus, in addition to the recovery, is to limit the theft of electricity,” he said, stressing that the losses resulting from distribution companies must be presented before the public. “If these casualties did not occur, it would be easier to reduce the country’s debt,” he noted.
Leghari said the whole government and the Council of Ministers expressed serious reservations about the matter. “The government has decided to correct the discs with steady determination,” he said. The boards of these companies were appointed on the basis of independent thought and strategic vision and the Department of Power has ended the culture of political recommendations in the tablets.
“For the first time in Pakistan’s history, Bill’s recovery has reached 96%,” he claimed. Referring only to theft, the electricity of $ 276 billion said last year and the reduction in theft damage is RS10-11 billion.
