- Countries that sign a joint statement include India, Pakistan, China.
- The statement criticizes the efforts to develop military infrastructure.
- The Taliban oppose any foreign military presence in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan regional neighbors appeared to be united against US President Donald Trump, the goal of taking the Bagram military base near Kabul, according to a statement released after their meeting in Moscow.
Moscow’s meeting on Afghanistan – the seventh event hosted by Russia, but was attended by the Taliban Foreign Minister for the first time – included India and Pakistan.
The 10 nations also included Russia, China and Iran, as well as the countries of Central Asia.
In a joint statement published by the Russian Foreign Ministry late Tuesday, the 10 countries did not name the United States or Bagram itself, but seemed to seek Trump’s plan for the base, supporting Taliban’s position on the issue.
“They (the meeting of the countries) were called unacceptable by the efforts of the countries to develop their military infrastructure in Afghanistan and neighboring states, as this does not serve the interests of regional peace and stability,” the joint statement said.
Taliban contrary to foreign forces
At a press conference on Tuesday in Moscow at the end of the event, Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi reiterated his position.
“Afghanistan is a free and independent country and throughout history it has never accepted the military presence of foreigners.
The US Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
The first administration of the Taliban was removed in 2001 with an invasion of the country led by the country, causing a rebellion from the team.
Bagram, just outside the capital Kabul, became the largest and most well -known US base in Afghanistan before the chaotic US withdrawal from the country in 2021 until the Taliban control.
Last month, Trump threatened “bad things” will happen in Afghanistan if he did not give back the bagram and mentioned what he called his strategic position near China.
Today’s and former US officials have doubts about Trump’s goal, saying that the re -emergence of Bagram may end up looking like a reappearance, demanding more than 10,000 troops as well as the development of advanced air defense defenders.
