Health officials in the Los Angeles prefecture reported the deaths of an elderly resident from a well -known but rare complication after a measles infection obtained during infancy and urged residents to ensure that their families are vaccinated.
Because it is important
The Ministry of Public Health of the Los Angeles Prefecture said on Thursday that the child was infected for the first time with measles as an infant before being eligible to receive the measles vaccine, which is recommended to be given between 12 and 15 months.
Although the child was recovered from the initial measles disease, they were developed and eventually died of subacute harmful pulpusal or SSPE – a rare, progressive brain disorder that may be a delayed complication of an early infection.
By the numbers
The SSPE affects about one in 10,000 measles cases, but the risk increases to one in 600 for infants infected before they become eligible for vaccination, according to La County Health.
Disease Control and Prevention Centers reported 1,454 confirmed measles cases at national level this year since 9 September.
Context
Measles is an extremely contagious viral infection that causes symptoms such as fever, cough and a characteristic rash. It can also lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
The US recorded the highest number of measles cases since 2000 earlier this year, with Texas and New Mexico leading to an increase in January due to reduced vaccination rates among children.
There were eight cases of measles in people in Los Angeles County, while infectious, including four inhabitants and four non -residents in 2025.
What will follow?
Health officials urge residents to check the immunization files, vaccinate eligible family members and take precautions, especially before traveling to measles areas.
