On July 21, two highly anticipated films, Oppenheimer and Barbie, hit theaters at the same time, inspiring the most popular fandom crossover called “Barbenheimer.” Much of Barbenheimer’s appeal came from the subjects of his two films other than the poles.
by Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer marked his first biopic about the ‘father of the atomic bomb’, J. Robert Oppenheimer, while Greta Gerwig Barbie drew fans into a frenzy as a satire of the beloved Mattel doll, unlike any previous adaptation.
Taking this cinematic look to the next level, famed B-movie director Charles Band has announced his upcoming film Barbenheimer, where bomb-making and Barbies are cleverly merged into a low-budget comedy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The man behind the production company Full Moon, Band has a repertoire of low-budget horror franchises such as Puppeteer, Ghoulies, Trancerand Demon games as well as the cult-hit Re-animator. However, it also points to the need for humor amid the deluge of dark and sad content in recent cinema.
Band recognizes the film’s intent to tap into a recent cultural trend, but also sees potential for something experimental. “It’s 100 percent true,” he said. “But it’s also an opportunity to have fun with the odd pairing of these two films and the combination of Barbieits atmosphere and darkness Oppenheimer.”
If there was any doubt about the Band’s commitment to exploring this absurd Gerwig-Nolan union, Full Moon released a humorous synopsis that reads: “They have great looks and super attitude! Oh, and now they have the bomb” as well as a camp poster. A silhouetted doll stands center stage in front of a cloud of explosions with “Barbenheimer” written in bold Barbie font and Pantone pink.
The idea for Barbenheimer originally designed by Band biographer Adam Felber, who also co-wrote the book with him Confessions of a Puppetmaster: A Hollywood Memoir of Ghouls, Guts, and Gonzo Filmmaking. Felber’s proposal was influenced by the worldwide fascination with the concept, prompting them to turn it into reality.
The film introduces us to Dr. Bambi J Barbenheimer, a talented doll scientist who inhabits the Gerwig-inspired, neon-lit Dolltopia with her partner Twink Dollman. Entering Nolan’s gritty narrative, Dr. Barbenheimer leaves for the real world after seeing how human children mistreat the dolls. Eventually, the doll scientist builds a massive nuclear bomb to end humanity and its grievances. Barbenheimer filming is expected to begin in 2024.
