The pharmaceutical industry needs urgent reforms

LAHORE: The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) has emphasized the need to update existing drug legislation to align with global trends for the benefit of patients and the pharmaceutical industry. “Local industries are closing due to historically high input costs, higher inflation and bank interest rates in Asia. Multinationals disappear due to excessive regulations. Currently, only four multinational corporations (MNCs) are operating in the country, all of which have recently reported historically high losses,” PPMA Chairman Mian Khalid Misbah said on Wednesday. Addressing the media, he emphasized that the patients are the ultimate sufferers and the situation is getting worse.

Balanced pharmaceutical regulations sought

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Muhammad Balighur Rehman, addressing the media at the inauguration of the two-day Pak Pharma and Healthcare Expo at Expo Centre, Lahore, emphasized the importance of a balanced regulatory framework for the pharmaceutical industry, according to a statement on Wednesday. He stressed that while the caretaker government’s initiative to deregulate drug prices is laudable, the regulations should not be overly strict, risking the exit of pharmaceutical companies from the industry. According to the release, the 16th Pak Pharma & Healthcare Exhibition & Conference (PPE) began with over 400 stalls and the participation of 100 foreign and local exhibitors.
