Pakistan seeks to renegotiate power deals to reduce unsustainable power costs, says Minister Leghari

Pakistan is renegotiating contracts with independent power producers to curb “unsustainable” electricity tariffs, Energy Minister Awais Ahmad Leghari said as power customers face rising unsustainable costs. Rising electricity tariffs have sparked social unrest and shuttered industries in the $350 billion economy, which has shrunk twice in recent years as inflation hit record highs. “The existing price structure of power in this country is not sustainable,” Awais Leghari, a federal minister who heads Pakistan’s Energy Department, told Reuters in an interview on Friday. Consumers are set to get a nominal reduction in electricity rates of up to 31 paisa per unit due to fuel adjustment for the month of July 2024. The Central Power Purchase Authority (CPPA) had asked for a reduction in

Countrywide protests against inflated electricity bills continue

Countrywide protests against inflated electricity bills continue in several cities unabated, as people take to the streets, torch their bills and lament that the government is further pressing the poor who are already suffering due to historic inflation and rising poverty. The Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to hold another protest today against the high bills in Islamabad. In Lahore, the party protested in Ichhra in the afternoon and said that while India had reached the moon, rulers in Pakistan are strangling the masses here.
