DISCO losses drain Rs 397b in FY25

NEPRA report reveals fiscal corrections have reduced cyclical debt, but utility performance remains poor Islamabad: Pakistan’s public sector electricity distribution companies continued to miss key performance benchmarks in FY2024-25 as excess transmission and distribution (T&D) losses and recovery shortfalls remained the main sources of financial stress in the electricity supply chain, according to the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) Industry Status Report 2025. NEPRA data showed that DISCOs recorded average T&D losses of 17.55% during the year, much higher than the permissible limit of 11.43%. KE is seeking a tariff hike of over Rs 3 per unit

Islamabad: K-Electric (KE) has sought an increase of over Rs 3 per unit in its electricity tariff due to July 2024 fuel levy adjustment. In this context, the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (Nepra) held a public hearing on Thursday for KE customers. The private power company has sought recovery of Rs 3.09 per kilowatt hour (kWh) from consumers through electricity bills. Many businessmen highlighted the need to supply natural gas to the JV, which would lead to a reduction in fuel duty adjustment. Nepra had earlier announced that the hearing would discuss issues related to the justification of fuel duty

Rising energy tariffs, IPPs cause mass frustration

LAHORE: The debate surrounding Pakistan’s rising electricity tariffs and the role of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) has sparked widespread public frustration in recent months. Businessmen, policymakers and politicians point the finger, often blaming the current chaos in the electricity sector on capacity payments, which IPPs receive even when they are not generating electricity. However, energy stakeholders argue that the situation is much more complex. They believe that many factors – including complex economic mechanisms, political decisions, global economic forces and above all, the volatile nature of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar – are leading to rising electricity bills.

Power tariff increased by Rs 1.9 per unit

Islamabad: The National Electricity Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase of up to Rs 1.90 per unit in electricity tariff under quarterly adjustment for the fourth quarter of the financial year 2023-24, which will result in a total burden of Rs 46 billion on consumers. The amount will be recovered from consumers of state-run electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and private utility K-Electric. Consumers will cough up billions of rupees mainly due to lower electricity demand, reduced use of maximum demand indicators (MDI) and loss-based overall technical and commercial (AT&C). However, Nepra chairman claimed that consumers will get a relief

Is net metering really hurting Discos?

Islamabad: The notion that ending the net metering policy is necessary is a myth propagated by the Electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) with the support of the Ministry of Power. This move appears to be an attempt to maintain their monopoly on power supply. Moreover, it appears to be aimed at safeguarding independent power producers (IPPs) who are milking around Rs 2.8 trillion from consumers in capacity payments. Experts say that currently Discos are exploiting people who have installed net metering. These consumers get only Rs 22 per unit for their solar power, while Discos resell it to other users at
