Pakistan seeks to renegotiate power deals to reduce unsustainable power costs, says Minister Leghari

Pakistan is renegotiating contracts with independent power producers to curb “unsustainable” electricity tariffs, Energy Minister Awais Ahmad Leghari said as power customers face rising unsustainable costs. Rising electricity tariffs have sparked social unrest and shuttered industries in the $350 billion economy, which has shrunk twice in recent years as inflation hit record highs. “The existing price structure of power in this country is not sustainable,” Awais Leghari, a federal minister who heads Pakistan’s Energy Department, told Reuters in an interview on Friday. He said discussions are taking place between power producers and the government because “there is a clear understanding

Consumers paying too much for electricity: NTDC

Islamabad: Officials of the National Transmission and Dispatch Corporation (NTDC) made a shocking revelation on Wednesday that consumers were paying 40,000 megawatts (MW) of power despite consuming less electricity. “Consumers use 12,000-13,000 MW of electricity but have to pay for 40,000 MW of power,” NTDC officials said during the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (Nepra) public hearing in the federal capital. Consumers are set to get a nominal reduction in electricity rates of up to 31 paisa per unit due to fuel adjustment for the month of July 2024. The Central Power Purchase Authority (CPPA) had asked for a reduction in

Rising energy tariffs, IPPs cause mass frustration

LAHORE: The debate surrounding Pakistan’s rising electricity tariffs and the role of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) has sparked widespread public frustration in recent months. Businessmen, policymakers and politicians point the finger, often blaming the current chaos in the electricity sector on capacity payments, which IPPs receive even when they are not generating electricity. However, energy stakeholders argue that the situation is much more complex. They believe that many factors – including complex economic mechanisms, political decisions, global economic forces and above all, the volatile nature of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar – are leading to rising electricity bills.

Power tariff increased by Rs 1.9 per unit

Islamabad: The National Electricity Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase of up to Rs 1.90 per unit in electricity tariff under quarterly adjustment for the fourth quarter of the financial year 2023-24, which will result in a total burden of Rs 46 billion on consumers. The amount will be recovered from consumers of state-run electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and private utility K-Electric. Consumers will cough up billions of rupees mainly due to lower electricity demand, reduced use of maximum demand indicators (MDI) and loss-based overall technical and commercial (AT&C). However, Nepra chairman claimed that consumers will get a relief

Gohar Ejaz attacks power producers for charging billions without generating power

Former caretaker Commerce Minister Dr Gohar Ejaz criticized the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) for allegedly charging the government Rs 200 billion without generating a single unit of electricity. At a press conference in Islamabad, Dr Ejaz called for a forensic audit of these transactions and questioned the effectiveness of the country’s energy policies. According to Dr Ejaz, three power plants were paid a substantial amount of Rs 200 billion, despite producing zero units of electricity. He highlighted the frustration of the business community, which demands transparency and accountability in the energy sector. “The business community stands with the 240 million

NEPRA figures reveal a shocking truth

Former Minister of Commerce and Industry Dr Gohar Ejaz while referring to the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) data said that at least four power plants receiving Rs 10 billion per month are running without providing any electricity. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Dr Gohar Ejaz referred to NEPRA data from January to March this year and highlighted how a significant portion of the country’s energy budget is being misallocated. During this period, NEPRA made monthly capacity payments of Rs 150 billion to various Independent Power Producers (IPPs). According to the former minister, half of
