ISLAMABAD: Shireen Mazari’s legal team has demanded an immediate medical examination of the former human rights minister after her condition worsened in custody.
Mazari was picked up by Islamabad Police last week as part of a crackdown on senior PTI workers.
Despite not attending any protests herself, Mazari was charged under the Maintenance of Public Order rules.
Her daughter Imaan Mazari has filed a writ petition seeking an immediate medical examination of her mother who she says is suffering from high blood pressure and swelling of the legs.
In an affidavit submitted before the Islamabad High Court, Imaan said: “That on 13.03.2023, pursuant to the directions of this honourable court, I was granted permission to meet my mother at Central Jail Adiala, Rawalpindi. Upon meeting her, I saw the rapid deterioration in her condition since she was arrested between 2.30 and 3 AM on 12.05.2023.”
Imaan said that her mother was also suffering from food poisoning and being kept in unhygienic conditions in C Class jail.
Speaking to reporters, Barrister Ahsan Jamil Pirzada said that this case was not about politics but a human rights case calling for legal and fair treatment towards a citizen of Pakistan.
“My mother’s life is in danger,” Imaan told people outside the courtroom.
Journalist Nasim Zehra took to Twitter to highlight her concern about Shireen Mazari whose condition remains uncertain.
