ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Opposition Leader in Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani filed an intra-court appeal in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday against the Senate chairman election.
Javed Iqbal Vains filed an appeal in the court on behalf of Yousaf Raza Gilani. The appeal received at the Registrar Office of the IHC pleads to declare a single bench’s decision as null and void.
Earlier, Islamabad High Court (IHC) single bench had rejected Gilani’s petition against the election of Sadiq Sanjrani as the Senate chairman.
In its 13-page written verdict, the IHC Chief Justice, Athar Minallah dismissed Gilani’s petition as not maintainable.
The IHC judgement stated: “This Court expects that, in order to maintain the dignity, integrity and independence of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament), the chosen representatives and political leadership will endeavour to resolve disputes without involving the judicial branch of the State, by giving effect to the privileges, powers and immunities prescribed in the Constitution.”
IHC’s verdict says the constitution gives protection to the proceedings of the Parliament and it can not be challenged in any court.
Meanwhile, Gilani lawyer told the court that they have challenged the Senate election, not its procedure. “Parliament’s business or procedure was not part of the March 12 Senate chairman’s election,” he added.
