Schauffele ends drought in the title in Japan

TOKYO:

Xander Schauffele won his first title of the year after completing a stroke by Max Greyserman at Baycurrent Classic, PGA Tour in Japan on Sunday.

The American finished a drought that extends back to his British Open win last year, which came two months after his first big -ups in the PGA Championship.

Schauffele, who won the Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021, ended at 19-below a seven final round of 64 containing eight Birdies and a Bogey at Yokohama Country Club.

Calmly he ran to a short Putt to close the victory, then he took his lid to recognize the crowd and hugged his Caddy.

“It feels good. It’s nice to know that I still have it,” said Schauffele, who struggled with an injury earlier in the year.

“It was a difficult year, but my team dragged me through it.”

Schauffele, who was a member of our team who lost the Ryder Cup two weeks ago, began the final round that took the lead with Greyserman.

The couple were quickly joined by Michael Thorbjornsen after the 24 -year -old American hit an eagle in the fourth hole.

Schauffele took the only lead after the 14th hole and never looked back, moving two shots ahead with a Nerveless Birdie at 17.

Greyserman made a last Gasp offer to make lost ground, but the eagle’s effort in the final hole brought out a short brief.

Schauffele said he was “separate” to win PGA Tour’s 10th victory in Japan, where his mother grew up and his grandparents still live.

“Let’s hope I take my step,” he said.

“It was a great learning experience with the injury this year.”

Greyserman was looking for his first title PGA Tour after completing four times as runners, including last year of the tournament in Japan.

Thorbjornsen ended the third, three strokes behind Schauffele.

Schauffele’s Ryder Cup teammate Collin Morikawa ended for 14th in 10-year Par.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama was in 20th place in eight.

American Matt McCarty shot the round of the day, shaking into an incredible 12 birdies to card 60.

McCarty, who interrupted eight straight holes in the back of nine, put the 18th to deny the rare achievement of a round of sub-60.

Baycurrent Classic is the only PGA tour event organized in Asia today.

It was previously known as Zozo championship and was first held in 2019 when Tiger Woods was the launch champion. Matsuyama won it in 2021.
