In a recent interview with iDream Mediadirector Sandeep Reddy Vanga spoke about the challenges and decisions that led to the remake of his Telugu blockbuster, Arjun Reddyin the Hindi version, Kabir Singh. Vanga shared his reluctance to undertake another remake in the future, expressing the difficulties and pain associated with the process.
After his success Arjun Reddy, Vanga initially pitched an idea to Mahesh Babu for his next project, but opted for the Hindi remake when Mahesh Babu opted for another venture. Despite initial plans with Ranveer Singh, who later declined, Vanga faced skepticism when he approached Shahid Kapoor for the lead role.
“I kept getting calls from Mumbai to do the remake,” said the director. “First, he was addressing Ranveer Singh. I wanted to do it with him. But in the end, he decided he wasn’t going to do it, because it was too dark for him at the time.” Vanga also acknowledged his concerns about Kapoor’s background, noting that people questioned his ability to achieve a box office hit. However, Vanga remained confident in the acting ability of the star, and Kabir Singh indeed it turned out to be a huge success, grossing INR 380 crore worldwide against a production cost of INR36 crore.
“Shahid’s track record was troubling,” Vanga said. “None of his solo films were INR 100 crore then, his highest was INR 65 crore. They were saying INR 55 crore, INR65 crore is the kind of business Telugu films do. “Why are you doing it with this guy? If it was Ranveer, the box office would have been higher.’ But I was always sure about Shahid, he’s a fantastic actor.” Reflecting on the journey, Vanga admitted that revamping a film with such a big run was challenging and the success of Kabir Singh it was crucial for him as a director. Despite initial skepticism, Kapoor’s performance resonated with audiences and the film exceeded expectations.
Vanga’s focus has now shifted to his upcoming film, Animal, for which he expects a stellar opening. The Ranbir Kapoor starrer has already created huge hype. As Vanga embarks on new projects, his insights into the dynamics of remakes and the triumph of Kabir Singh provide a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of filmmaking in the ever-evolving landscape of the Indian film industry.
