Police held back the violent crowds using riot shields, while a police car was set on fire
A knife attack in the Irish capital Dublin injured three children and two adults earlier on Thursday, leading to violent clashes between police and protesters later in the day in the city centre.
According The Irish Timesgardai – Ireland’s police force – claimed that a “paraphrased crazed hooligan driven by far-right ideology” was behind violent protests in Dublin in which rioters threw flares and fireworks at police.
The unrest continued while a five-year-old schoolgirl and a 30-year-old woman identified as a “member of staff who looked after her” were treated for serious injuries in hospital.
Crowds in the city center were held back by police using riot shields, while a police car was set on fire in retaliation for the stabbings in Parnell East Square.
Buses and a Luas tram on O’Connell Bridge were set on fire, while people looted and smashed shops with metal bars, while rioters tried to punch and kick police.
A Garda public order team was also sent in to contain the chaos.
Police have arrested a suspect in the stabbings, and while they do not believe the crime is terrorism-related, they also said they have not “ruled out a motive.”
Superintendent (SI) Liam Geraghty told the media earlier at a press conference that the spate of stabbings appeared to be an “autonomous attack”.
According to SI Geraghty, three patients received medical treatment for less serious injuries: a 50-year-old man, a six-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy. A short time later, the boy was released from Children’s Health Ireland Hospital in Crumlin Hospital.
After the riot, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris told reporters outside Mountjoy Garda Station: “I think there are disgraceful scenes in terms of a major investigation, maintaining a scene and gathering evidence.
“We have a completely crazy hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology, and also this subversive trend that engages in serious violence.
“We are putting together resources to deal with this and this will be dealt with properly. I have given full direction to our resources here in terms of apprehending and bringing offenders to justice.
“It is our responsibility to make sure we police the streets and part of that is asking people to act responsibly and not listen to misinformation and rumors circulating on social media.
“The facts are established, but the facts are still not clear in many rumors and innuendos are spread for malicious purposes.”
