ISLAMABAD: Wajid Zia, who is famous for his role in the Panama Papers has been removed as the Director-General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and has been appointed as the DG of the National Police Bureau, a significantly less powerful post.
The former Inspector General of the Kyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, Sanaullah Abbasi been appointed as the new DG FIA with immediate effect.
According to sources privy to this development, Wajid Zia had not been cooperating in the reinvestigation of the Hudaibya case against the Sharif Family. Earlier, Wajid Zia had been the star prosecution witness in all 3 references against Nawaz Sharif.
A source in FIA claimed that Wajid Zia may have been removed to satisfy disgruntled PTI leader, Jahangir Khan Tareen. Wajid Zia played an instrumental role in investigating the sugar crisis which has allegedly benefitted Jahangir Khan Tareen to the tune of tens of billions.
Senior bureaucrats have claimed that a transfer from DG FIA to DG NPB is unattractive and reflects that this was a forced transfer.
A notification issued by the establishment division confirms that Wajid Zia, a BS-22 officer has been transferred and posted as NPB DG under the interior division with immediate effect.
The notification of the appointment of Sanaullah Abbasi states: “With the approval of the federal government, Mr Sanaullah Abbasi, a BS-22 officer of PSP, presently serving as Provincial Police Officer (PPO), Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is transferred and posted as FIA DG under interior division, in terms of Section 3(2) of the FIA Act, 1974, with immediate effect and until further orders.”
Mozzam Jan Ansar has been appointed as the now Inspector General of KP.
