Punjab Bar Council illegally suspended my license: Barrister Hassaan Niazi

LAHORE: Barrister Hassaan Khan Niazi has claimed that the suspension of his licence by the Punjab Bar Council was illegal since he was not even heard by the PBC and the suspension was ordered in an ex parte hearing.

In an exclusive conversation with The Pakistan Daily, the human rights lawyer said, “My license was cancelled without any hearing because I didn’t withdraw from the Bugti case”.

Niazi is the counsel for Wishah Abu Bakr, the former daughter in law of the late Nawab Akbar Bugti and the wife of Shahzawar Bugti.

Wishah had alleged that Shahzawar Bugti had leaked her private pictures online and with friends and family and had attempted to murder her. She registered a case with FIA Cyber Crime and called for Shahzawar to be arrested who she alleged was residing in the home of EX DG FIA, Muhammad Manzoor.

Barrister Hassaan Khan Niazi, who is known for taking up difficult and controversial cases was assaulted by the Bugti family lawyers in Lahore Session Court, however, an FIR was launched against Niazi alleging that he assaulting Shahzawar’s mother in court.

The suspension of Niazi’s license was based on this FIR, which has been termed as “false” by the human rights barrister.

Taking to Twitter, Niazi said that there was immense pressure on him to back off from the case against Shahzawar Bugti.

Niazi also alleged that his license may have been suspended because the Vice Chairman of the PBC was “best friends of the lawyer who is representing the Bugtis in the court”.

Wishah Abu Bakr also confirmed that her legal team was attacked in the Session Court. “Today at Shahzawar Bugti’s mother’s pre-arrest, opposing counsel, Ayaz Butt accused my lawyer of blasphemy & physically attacked my legal team, befitting responses given. No cowardice can scare me, will fight till the end,” she wrote on Twitter.
