ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has said that the authority to appoint the new Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence lies with the Prime Minister.
Fawad Chaudhry said that the Prime Minister and the military leadership are on the same page over the appointment of the new DG ISI.
“The Prime Minister and the army chief Qamar Bajwa had a long meeting last night. Gen Bajwa and the Prime Minister have an extremely close and positive relationship,” the information minister said.
Fawad Chaudhry said that the appointment will be finalised amicably. “The PM has taken the cabinet members in confidence over the matter.”
“The PM’s Office will never take a step which will jeopardise the stature of the country’s military leadership and vice versa,” the information minister said, stated that the new DG ISI would be appointed as per law.
“That authority lies with the prime minister,” Fawad Chaudhry said.
The Pakistan Daily was the first news outlet to report that Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum would be appointed as the new DG ISI but sources have claimed that Prime Minister Imran Khan was not pleased with the announcement by ISPR.
Sources have suggested that the Prime Minister wanted the announcement to come from the Prime Minister’s office.
