ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an alliance of opposition parties, has nominated JUI-F’s Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri as its candidate for the Senate deputy chairman’s slot.
According to the reports, PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has approved Maulana Haideri’s nomination as the PDM’s candidate. A JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghauri also confirm the development.
This comes as earlier, the ruling party offered Jamiat UIema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi the position of deputy chairman of the upper house.
According to the details, Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak said that the ruling party has told senior JUI-F leader Abdul Ghafoor Haideri that he can be the deputy chairman Senate.
When the JUI-F leader was asked a question whether the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) had offered him the slot, he said that he has not been formally informed about a decision. “I cannot say anything about the development as of now.”
This comes as JUI-F secretary met PTI’s Senate chairman candidate Sadiq Sanjarani on Tuesday.
In response to this development, PMLN senior leader Rana Sanaullah said the move by the government seemed to be an attempt to cause a rift within the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).
Earlier, on March 4, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced Sadiq Sanjrani as the party’s candidate for chairman Senate.
Meanwhile, PDM on Monday unanimously nominated former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who recently defeated the PTI’ Hafeez Sheikh, for the post of Senate chairman.
The election for the posts of Senate chairman and deputy chairman will be held on March 12.
