Novak Djokovic began his pursuit of a 25th Grand Slam title record with a synthetic victory of four series over Alexandre Muller in France on July 1st, proceeding to the second round of Wimbledon in front of a crowded Court.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion dominated 6-1, 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-2 in a match that stretched just over three hours.
Despite the strong start, Djokovic is waving in the second set, missing six points before the Muller was capitalized in Tiebreak. However, Serbian quickly reaffirmed control, removing a pair of medical visits to the third set to dominate the rest of the race.
Niki marks a very promising start to Djokovic, who is turning 38 this year and arrived at SW19 after a relatively quiet season with his standards. He recently raised his 100th title at Geneva level and reached the semifinals at Roland Garros.
Speaking after the race, Djokovic expressed confidence in his ability to challenge the title once again.
“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I had the opportunity, to be honest,” he said. “I had undoubtedly the greatest success of any Grand Slam here in the last decade. I think I can go all the way.”
Djokovic will then face Britain’s Dan Evans on July 3 in what he predicts will be a live meeting at home for the 34 -year -old wildcard.
“It’s just the beginning of the tournament,” Djokovic noted. “There are a lot of fantastic players in the tie. Playing a British at Wimbledon will be tough, but I’m looking forward to it.”
He also issued the surface of the grass that has become synonymous with the domination of Grand Slam.
“I have always felt that the grass, especially in the second half of my career, brought the best to me. So why not do it again?”
Djokovic seeks to extend his lead to the top of the Grand Slam rankings and add to his legacy to the surface that has best served him in recent years.
